Couponing 101: Publix

Here is Publix's coupon policy and my tips and tricks for shopping at Publix!
  • If an item is not on sale at Publix don't buy it there!  It will be much cheaper somewhere else!  This goes for meat and produce prices too!
  • Publix doubles manufacturer coupons that are $0.50 or less including internet printables
    • If a coupon states “do not double” but the barcode starts with a 5 it will still double
    • Publix does not accept expired coupons
  • Publix accepts one manufacturer AND one store OR one competitor coupon per item unless prohibited by the coupon
    • Store and competitor coupons do not double
    • Each store chooses who they consider a competitor--a competitor is defined as a “traditional” local grocery store--must have a produce and meat department, a bakery and a deli
      • Target, Star Market and Earth Fare are considered by most stores in this area to be competitors. Some also accept Dollar General Market, KMart, Piggly Wiggly, Griner’s or other smaller stores--check with customer service for your individual store’s list.
    • Publix does not get reimbursed for competitor coupons--use them judiciously
    • Publix will accept competitor $/$$ coupons--use one every time for even more savings!
    • If a coupon (or stacked coupons) are worth more than the item purchased you will get the overage applied to the rest of your cart and the sales tax.  Publix will not give you money back!  Try to purchase items that give you overage each trip to lower your out if pocket costs!
  • There is no limit to the number of coupons you can use
    • If your coupons total more than $50 or you have more coupons than items yourtransaction will need manager approval (not a big deal--it just requires them to enter a code)
  • You can use two coupons for BOGO sales (one per item).  You do not have to purchase two items--each item will ring up half price
    • A BOGO sale and a BOGO coupon do NOT make both items free since each item rings up half price
  • Seniors get a 5% discount on Wednesdays
  • Publix has a penny item on Wednesdays.  This is a store brand item you can purchase for$0.01 with an additional $10 (before coupon) purchase.  The coupon is required and is found in the Wednesday newspaper
  • Give the cashier the $/$$ coupon first, then manufacturer's coupons, then store and competitor coupons.  If you have a coupon for a free or BOGO item, they appreciate it if you give it to them as they are scanning the item (or they'll have to look the price up at the end which takes more time)
  • Publix pharmacy will accept competitor coupons for gift cards with prescription transfers-- one per day, not prescription
  • There is a limit on the number of like items you can buy in a single visit.  Each store has their own set number.  If an item is on sale 10 for $10 (or another specified quantity) you can buy 10 (or 8 or whatever...usually keep it under 10 like items per visit)
  • Limit one coupon per purchase = limit one coupon per item purchased (not one coupon per transaction)
  • Sign up for their magazines and clubs to receive coupons mailed to you at home:
  • Publix Upromise Program is a card you scan at the register with your purchase.  Participating brands will deposit money into your Upromise account with your purchases!
